Abe Lucas Extension Marks a Turning Point for Seahawks’ Offensive Line Struggles
The Seattle Seahawks have finally secured a long-term solution on the offensive line, signing right tackle Abraham Lucas to a three-year, $46 million extension on Thursday. While the deal is important on its own, its greater significance lies in what it represents for the franchise’s long-standing struggles to develop and retain offensive linemen.
Lucas, who impressed in his 2022 rookie season but has dealt with injuries since, is now a symbol of renewed hope for the Seahawks. The move shows the team’s belief in his potential and signifies a rare success in drafting and developing talent on the offensive line.
Just how rare? According to The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, Lucas is only the second offensive lineman drafted during general manager John Schneider’s tenure (which began in 2010) to earn a major long-term extension. The last one was Justin Britt in 2017. Before Lucas’ new deal, Seattle’s offensive line was not only one of the league’s youngest but also its most affordable. Now, Lucas stands as both the oldest and highest-paid member of the unit.
High Expectations for Lucas Going Forward
Following the announcement, head coach Mike Macdonald spoke highly of Lucas, emphasizing his toughness, work ethic, and potential to be a dominant force.
“He’s a finisher,” Macdonald said via the team’s website. “You watch his rookie tape and it’s clear—he ends plays with authority. That kind of mindset spreads to the whole team.”
