Astros’ Taylor Trammell Escapes Discipline Despite Illegal Bat Ruling

Houston Astros outfielder Taylor Trammell won’t face any punishment, despite his bat being deemed illegal by Major League Baseball.

During the game between the Astros and New York Yankees, a strange incident unfolded when Yankees manager Aaron Boone approached the umpires to discuss Trammell’s bat. Trammell, who had just hit a double and was standing on second base, was confused when his bat was handed over to an authenticator for further inspection.

Boone explained that they had noticed something unusual with Trammell’s bat and had been in contact with MLB officials about it. After reviewing the bat, someone in the league office reportedly flagged it as “illegal,” prompting Boone to bring the issue to the umpires’ attention.

MLB Determines Bat Was Illegal

The league has since ruled that Trammell’s bat was indeed illegal. According to The Athletic (subscription required), MLB’s bat regulations require that a two-tone bat must have a clear dividing line between the two colors, with the sections separated by at least 18 inches from the knob or the 1-inch solid ring. Trammell’s bat was flagged because there was discoloration on its barrel, which violated this rule.

Boone noted that they had spotted the discoloration on video but made it clear that he wasn’t accusing Trammell of any wrongdoing.

No Discipline for Trammell

Despite the bat being deemed illegal, Trammell won’t face any penalties. MLB concluded that the bat did not provide him with a competitive advantage. As a result, the umpires treated the situation similarly to an “impermissible glove color or design,” informing Trammell that he could no longer use the bat, but no further action would be taken.

Ultimately, Trammell will only lose one of his favorite bats, which he has used both in the minors and during batting practice. No disciplinary measures will be imposed.
