Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends Elite $29.4 Million Defenseman to Rangers
The New York Rangers are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2023-24 season. Despite a promising 12-4-0 start, the team faltered badly, plagued by off-ice distractions and questionable management decisions, ultimately missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Given the Rangers’ proud history, it’s no surprise they’ve approached the offseason with urgency. Key moves have already been made, with Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller being traded, and Vladislav Gavrikov being brought in to strengthen the defense. 
With the 2025-26 NHL season fast approaching—just over a month until their opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 7—the Rangers still have time to improve their roster. Despite a quiet trade market over the summer, there are still moves to be made.
One area where New York could bolster their lineup is the left-shot defenseman position. Heavy.com proposes a bold trade between the Rangers and the Seattle Kraken for star defender Vince Dunn.

- Seattle Kraken acquire: Drew Fortescue, Carson Soucy, and a conditional 2028 second-round pick, which becomes a 2027 first-round pick if the Rangers reach the Eastern Conference Finals in either 2026 or 2027.
Why This Trade Makes Sense for Both Teams
For the Kraken, dealing Dunn could be a key step in their rebuild. The 26-year-old defenseman was pivotal in Seattle’s 2023 postseason run, contributing 14 goals and 64 points. However, the team has struggled in the years since, missing the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and sitting near the bottom of the standings. With Dunn under contract until 2027, the Kraken may look to move him before his deal expires, especially since their playoff hopes seem distant in the short term.
For the Rangers, acquiring Dunn would solidify their top-four defense. With Gavrikov already signed to partner with Adam Fox, this trade would give the Rangers flexibility, allowing them to pair Gavrikov with Fox or create a dynamic defensive duo with Dunn and Fox. Either combination would significantly strengthen their blue line and push them closer to playoff contention.
