Titans Lock Down Starting Safety with Three-Year Extension
The Tennessee Titans have secured a crucial member of their secondary for the long term. Veteran safety Amani Hooker, who was drafted by the Titans in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, has signed a three-year extension, keeping him with the team through 2028.
The deal, which was finalized just a day before the Titans’ season opener against the Denver Broncos, is worth $48.6 million and includes $29 million in guaranteed money. This extension makes Hooker’s $48.6 million contract the 11th largest among active safeties, surpassing the salaries of players like Talanoa Hufanga, Justin Reid, and Harrison Smith.
Hooker’s Consistency and Impact
Since being drafted by Tennessee, Hooker has been a vital part of their defense. Over the past four seasons, he has played more than 500 defensive snaps each year and has never posted a defensive grade lower than 60, according to Pro Football Focus.
In 2024, Hooker recorded 71 tackles, forced two fumbles, and intercepted five passes, ranking sixth in the league for interceptions. He allowed a 64.9% completion rate and just 220 yards in coverage.
With Hooker’s new deal in place, the Titans have now locked in several key players in their secondary for the long term. L’Jarius Sneed is in the second year of his four-year contract, Xavier Woods is under contract through 2026, and Kevin Winston Jr. has four years remaining on his rookie deal. Jarvis Brownlee is signed through 2027, while Roger McCreary and Quandre Diggs are the only notable players with expiring contracts after this season.
A Crucial Step in the Titans’ Rebuild
At just 27 years old, Hooker is still in the prime of his career, making this a significant move for the Titans as they continue to rebuild a defense that struggled last season, allowing over 27 points per game. Keeping Hooker in the fold for the next three years is a crucial step in strengthening their defense.
The Titans’ revamped secondary will face a tough test in Week 1, as they go up against the Denver Broncos and quarterback Bo Nix, who is expected to lead a high-powered offense in 2025. If Hooker and the defense can limit Nix’s passing success, Tennessee will have a strong chance to pull off an upset in their season opener.
