Titans Tackle Penalty Concerns
The Tennessee Titans are fully aware of their penalty issues following their season-opening loss in Denver. While the 12-20 defeat wasn’t disastrous on the surface — with the team forcing multiple turnovers and staying competitive — a closer look reveals a significant problem that needs addressing for future success. 
The main issue? Penalties — specifically 13 of them. Combine that with the 131 yards lost due to those infractions, and it becomes clear that this is something the Titans cannot afford to ignore.
Fortunately, the first step toward resolving any problem is acknowledging it. In his Monday press conference after Sunday’s loss, head coach Brian Callahan addressed the issue head-on, calling the penalties “frustrating.” He added, “I was disappointed by that. The amount of work we put in, and to see that show up in the opening game was definitely disappointing.”
The Titans’ 13 penalties were costly, costing them 131 yards. It doesn’t matter how well the team is playing if they’re consistently shooting themselves in the foot with flags.
Callahan expressed frustration with “some of the types” of penalties, admitting that he had hoped his team would have outgrown such mistakes, or at least reduced their frequency. On a positive note, he assured that the team would be focusing on improving discipline throughout the week to limit penalties ahead of their upcoming home game against the Rams.
Los Angeles poses a unique challenge for Tennessee given Sean McVay’s experience in creating effective game plans. The Rams’ mix of veterans and proven players will be ready to capitalize on any Titans mistakes, so the younger, less experienced Tennessee squad will need to find ways to limit penalties and execute more efficiently in front of their home crowd. With only a few days to prepare, Callahan and his coaching staff will be hoping to keep the flags in check and improve their discipline heading into Week 2.
