Lights, Camera, Islanders! New Docuseries Offers Behind-the-Scenes Look at Team’s Busy Summer
The New York Islanders are giving fans an inside look into their transformative summer with a new season-long docuseries titled On The Island. The series will cover the significant changes and pivotal moments that have shaped the team’s offseason.
“We’re really excited to bring fans behind the scenes and provide them with the insider perspective they’ve always wanted,” said Alex Leafer, the Islanders’ senior director of production, technology, and innovation, in an interview with The Post. “We’ve been planning this for about a year, and it’s thrilling to see it all come together.” 
The first of six episodes, each around 30 minutes long, was released on YouTube Wednesday, with more episodes scheduled to be released throughout key moments of the upcoming season.
The debut episode focuses on the hiring of general manager Mathieu Darche and the team’s preparations for the 2023 NHL draft. It highlights the Islanders’ decision to select defenseman Matthew Schaefer with their first overall pick, followed by forward Victor Eklund and defenseman Kashawn Aitcheson in the opening round.
“Once Mathieu joined, he was very aligned with our vision for the future,” Leafer shared, adding that future episodes will dive deep into key developments from the team’s summer camps and the excitement surrounding the 2025 season.
The first episode also addresses the fan-favorite trade of defenseman Noah Dobson to the Montreal Canadiens, a topic Darche discusses on camera.
As the series progresses, fans can expect “unexpected cameos” from notable figures in the hockey world, with the goal of adding a “superstar element” to the Islanders’ journey.
“This is a chance for fans to feel like they’re part of the team’s story, not just watching from the sidelines,” Leafer said.
In local sports news, high school football returns this weekend with the Massapequa Chiefs hosting the Freeport Red Devils for a Friday night lights game at 6:30 at Berner Middle School, due to field renovations. On Saturday, Oceanside opens its season at Uniondale at 11 a.m.
