Cardinals Officially Part Ways with 8-Year MLB Veteran Garrett Hampson
The St. Louis Cardinals officially made a roster move on Thursday, releasing veteran utility man Garrett Hampson after a challenging stint with the team.
Earlier in the week, the Cardinals brought Alec Burleson back into the lineup and promoted left-handed pitcher Nick Raquet. To make room, they optioned right-handed pitcher Andre Granillo to the minors and designated Hampson for assignment, according to the team’s announcement.
Shortly after being designated for assignment, the Cardinals decided to release Hampson, as confirmed by the MLB transaction log and reported by Newsweek’s Noah Camras.
“The St. Louis Cardinals officially released Garrett Hampson after a difficult run with the team,” Camras noted. “After being designated for assignment earlier this week and clearing waivers, the Cardinals opted to release him into free agency. Hampson’s 2025 season has been tough, starting with a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks before bouncing between the Cardinals, Reds, and Diamondbacks.”
Hampson’s 2025 season has been a roller coaster, with stints in the majors with the Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and Cincinnati Reds. As the regular season winds down, he’s back on the free-agent market.
During his time with St. Louis, Hampson appeared in 35 games, posting a .103/.133/.138 slash line with nine runs and one RBI.
A veteran of eight MLB seasons, Hampson first entered the league in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies. Over his career, he’s also played for the Miami Marlins, Kansas City Royals, Diamondbacks, Reds, and now the Cardinals. With just a few weeks remaining in the season, it remains to be seen whether he’ll find another team before year’s end.
