New York Rangers Sign 6’7″ Defenseman Who Left NHL Three Years Ago
The New York Rangers have bolstered their defense with some added size ahead of training camp by signing 6’7″ veteran defenseman Andrej Sustr.
As the Rangers gear up for training camp next week, they’ve brought in Sustr, a player eager to make his NHL return. The 34-year-old’s most recent stint in the NHL was with the Anaheim Ducks during the 2021-22 season. Since then, he’s played in various leagues, including the AHL, the German DEL, and last year, he split time between HC Dynamo Pardubice in Czechia and Tappara in Finland’s Liiga.
Sustr’s Role: Adding Depth to the Rangers’ Defense?
Sustr brings 361 NHL games of experience to the Rangers and adds much-needed size to their defensive lineup, standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 216 pounds. In addition to his physical presence, Sustr has proven offensive ability, particularly during his standout seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014-15 and 2015-16. As a right-handed defenseman, he has averaged 16:14 minutes per game over his career, accumulating 11 goals and 58 assists for 69 points.
It’s noteworthy that after three seasons away from the NHL, Sustr earned an invitation to the Rangers’ training camp, indicating that GM Chris Drury and the organization see potential in him. Whether he earns a spot on the Rangers roster or joins their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, remains to be seen.
After a disappointing 2024-25 season, the Rangers are clearly aiming to turn things around, with changes made in management, coaching, and player personnel. Fans will be hoping this is the year the team makes a deep run back to the Stanley Cup Finals.
