Fletcher Loyer Discusses the Culture of Purdue Basketball
Fletcher Loyer has had a standout career at Purdue since joining the program ahead of the 2022-23 season. As a freshman, he secured a starting spot that he’s held onto ever since.
Over his first three seasons, Loyer has scored 1,281 points and boasts a .400 three-point shooting percentage, establishing himself as one of the top shooters in college basketball. However, the individual recognition hasn’t been his focus—his decision to commit to Purdue was driven by more than personal achievement, largely due to the culture and expectations set by head coach Matt Painter.
“That’s why you come to a place like this, you’re playing for Purdue,” Loyer said in an interview with the Field of 68. “You’re not playing for yourself.”
What has meant most to Loyer during his time in West Lafayette are the team accomplishments. Under Painter, Purdue has won two Big Ten regular season titles, a Big Ten Tournament championship, and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. Loyer’s Boilermakers reached the National Championship Game in 2024 and made it to the Sweet 16 in 2025.
“That was our goal, to do what we’ve done,” Loyer said. “It’s been about as good as it can get, I’ll say that.”
Purdue’s Relentless Drive for More
Despite all they’ve achieved, Loyer and his teammates aren’t content yet. Heading into the 2025-26 season, Purdue is considered one of the top contenders for the national title. While some may shy away from the weight of those expectations, Loyer is fully embracing the challenge.
“That’s what we want to do, we want to hang a banner,” he said. “If you’re not striving for that, you’re not pushing yourself. I wouldn’t say it’s national championship or bust, but it’s what we’re working towards and what we’ll be satisfied with in the end.”
The Boilermakers’ quest for more begins on Tuesday, Nov. 4, with their regular-season opener against Evansville. Before that, they’ll head to Lexington on Friday, Oct. 24, for an exhibition game against Kentucky.
