For New York Islanders prospect Isaiah George, this week’s rookie camp has been about more than just drills and scrimmages — it’s been a chance to showcase how much he’s developed since his brief NHL debut last season. The young forward, who saw action with the Islanders in 2024-25, is determined to build on that experience and make a push for a larger role.
“It was a lot of fun,” George said after Day 3 of camp. “It was my first time playing in a real game-type setting here, so it felt great to compete, score a few goals, battle hard — just overall a really good experience.”
With a smaller roster at rookie camp compared to July’s development camp, George has embraced the increased opportunities on the ice.
“With fewer guys, you’re getting more reps and more shifts right after each other,” he explained. “It’s been great — I feel like it’s setting us up really well for main camp and getting everything rolling.”
George shared that he devoted the summer to improving every part of his game, with a particular emphasis on skating and playmaking — skills he knows are essential to securing a permanent spot in the NHL. “I felt like I made a big leap last year, and now it’s about continuing to build on that,” he said.
Coaches have been reinforcing the importance of pace and situational awareness, especially on the defensive end. “They’ve really been stressing how important it is for defensemen to join the transition and then be sharp on two-on-ones — forcing guys wide and taking away options,” George explained.
With added confidence from his NHL debut and a strong showing in camp, George appears poised to make the most of his next opportunity.
