Brad Marchand Surprised to Stay with Panthers After Free Agency
Brad Marchand’s 2024-25 season was one of the most captivating stories in the NHL. The longtime Boston Bruins captain found himself in a contract dispute with his team and was unexpectedly traded to the Florida Panthers just before the trade deadline, a move that shocked many.
Despite the sudden change, Marchand played a pivotal role in helping the Panthers repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. He finished the postseason with 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) and was involved in several crucial moments throughout their championship run.
Given that he was set to become a free agent, many assumed Marchand would price himself out of Florida once the season ended. However, in a surprising turn of events, Panthers general manager Bill Zito made it work, securing Marchand’s return to the team.
“I didn’t expect to be a Panther this year, to be honest,” Marchand admitted. “I didn’t think it was going to work with the salary cap and everything. So when Bill called and told me he wanted to make it work, I was ecstatic,” Marchand shared with reporter Jordan McPherson on X (formerly Twitter).
The 37-year-old winger ultimately signed a six-year, $31.5 million contract extension just before hitting free agency this summer.
Marchand Plans to Play Until He’s ‘Kicked Out of the League’
Many were surprised by the term of Marchand’s contract extension, especially considering he’s in his late thirties. The deal could keep him with the Panthers until he’s 43, and Marchand has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
“I want to play until I get kicked out of the league,” he said, emphasizing his desire to keep playing for as long as possible.
Known as one of the most polarizing players in the league, Marchand has often been disliked by fans of other teams, but after his standout performance last season, even rivals have started to appreciate what he brings to the table—unless, of course, you’re a Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Looking ahead, Marchand and the Panthers are focused on making history in the 2025-26 season, with the goal of becoming just the sixth team in NHL history to win three consecutive Stanley Cups.
