Kansas State Coach Chris Klieman Reflects on Open Week and Adjustments Needed

Kansas State football coach Chris Klieman made it clear how the Wildcats will use their open week before facing UCF on September 27.

“We’re going to make some changes, and we’re going to fight hard through this stretch as we head to UCF and into the tougher part of our schedule,” Klieman said after the Wildcats’ 23-17 loss to Arizona. “I told the team, ‘Do not jump off this ship,’ and I don’t think we will. I think you all know we won’t.”

With a 1-3 record to start the season, Kansas State’s hopes for a Big 12 title have all but disappeared, and fans are now simply hoping for a few wins to salvage what could already be a lost season.

Several issues have been apparent in the Wildcats’ first four games, and Klieman has recognized the need for change. One area that needs attention is the use of quarterback Avery Johnson.

Avery Johnson Needs More Freedom

Klieman’s cautious approach to using Johnson should be abandoned. With the season in jeopardy, it’s time to unleash Johnson and take advantage of his athleticism.

Currently, Johnson isn’t utilizing his legs enough, especially on scrambles, despite having opportunities. He has just three scramble attempts for 48 yards and 18 designed rushes for 36 yards in the first four games. Last season, he had 23 scrambles for 183 yards and 73 designed runs for 516 yards.

Given the struggles of the offensive line in run-blocking this year, relying more on Johnson’s legs could be a better option. There have been moments where Johnson kept plays alive by scrambling, but he often chose to look for a pass downfield rather than running for a first down. While developing his passing skills is important, moving the chains with his legs is what the team needs most right now to sustain drives and keep the offense moving.
