Cleveland Guardians Announce Starting Rotation Adjustments for Key Playoff Push
The Cleveland Guardians have outlined their starting pitching plans for this weekend’s crucial four-game series against the Minnesota Twins, which includes a doubleheader on Saturday at Target Field. 
Manager Stephen Vogt confirmed that rookie left-hander Parker Messick will start on Friday for the series opener. Messick has been impressive since his promotion on August 20, most recently earning a solid performance on September 13 against the White Sox, where he threw six innings, allowing just one run and striking out six.
For Saturday’s doubleheader, Vogt announced that Logan Allen and Slade Cecconi will each start one of the games, though the team has yet to determine which will take Game 1 and which will take Game 2. Allen is set to make one of his most significant starts of the year, while Cecconi, who was acquired in the Josh Naylor trade last offseason, will need to deliver another strong performance, as he has done several times this season.
Joey Cantillo will take the mound for Sunday’s series finale. While Cantillo has had some inconsistencies this season, he’ll be crucial for the Guardians as they aim to remain in contention for a playoff spot in the American League.
With every remaining game essentially a must-win, the Guardians will need their best pitching on display throughout the weekend. Vogt also highlighted the importance of managing the bullpen, especially with the doubleheader on Saturday. Given the condensed schedule, relievers like Matt Festa, Zak Kent, and Kolby Allard could be called upon to eat innings, much like Pedro Avila did last season.
Cleveland’s pitching staff has been tested all season with injuries, inconsistency, and off-field issues, but this weekend’s series against a divisional rival offers a chance to show the depth and resilience of the staff under pressure.
As the regular season winds down, the Guardians’ playoff hopes are slim, but still possible. The decisions on the weekend’s rotation emphasize the importance of each inning, and Vogt is trusting his young pitchers to step up in this critical moment against a team looking to play spoiler.
