Jets Powerhouse Is Getting Unwarranted Criticism
Jets QB Justin Fields Facing Unjustified Criticism
It’s still early in the season, but the narrative surrounding the New York Jets and quarterback Justin Fields has shifted dramatically. With only two games played so far, it’s far too soon to make definitive judgments.
The Jets have lost both games so far: a Week 1 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers, which initially sparked some optimism, and a Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills, which has changed the narrative. As the Jets prepare for a Week 3 match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fields will be sidelined due to a concussion.
Since the Week 2 loss to the Bills, Fields and the Jets’ quarterback situation have been heavily criticized. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, for example, labeled the quarterback position as New York’s “biggest problem.”
However, some of these early assessments feel a bit too hasty. “Problem: Quarterback,” Gagnon said. “Not only is Fields out with a concussion for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers, but he was also struggling before the injury. His accuracy was a major issue in the Week 2 loss to Buffalo.”
Gagnon continued, suggesting that the Jets are now relying on 36-year-old Tyrod Taylor, who has thrown only 33 passes since 2024, presenting a “clear-cut ceiling” for the team. “Combine that reality with the 64 points they’ve given up, and now the Jets are underdogs in Tampa. The Fields/Aaron Glenn era is off to a nightmare start,” Gagnon added.
It’s surprising how quickly the perception around Fields and the Jets has shifted. After Week 1, many viewed Fields as a potential long-term solution for the team. But after one tough week, the quarterback position has suddenly become a major weakness. Fields, who is just 26 years old, was up against a Super Bowl contender and is still adjusting to the changes New York made in the offseason. There will be highs and lows, and while Week 2 was a tough outing, the quarterback situation isn’t the Jets’ most significant issue at the moment.
