Penn State Considering Expanded Role for Punter Gabe Nwosu
Penn State’s punter and kickoff specialist, Gabe Nwosu, could take on an even bigger role for the Nittany Lions this season, possibly adding long-range field goals to his responsibilities.
Last season, in a tie game with USC, Penn State coach James Franklin opted to attempt a Hail Mary rather than a long field goal, but this year, the team might consider turning to Nwosu for a kick of 60 yards or more. Special teams coordinator Stacy Lustig hinted at this possibility, stating, “This year could be a different decision where he potentially can make that field goal. He has the ability to make long-range kicks, close to 70 yards, honestly.”
Nwosu, a 6-6, 297-pound fifth-year senior, has been a standout for the second-ranked Nittany Lions this season. Known for his size and athleticism, Nwosu made Bruce Feldman’s “Freaks List” and is also on the Ray Guy Award watchlist for the nation’s top punter. He has been Penn State’s starting punter and has averaged 48.6 yards per punt, with all five of his attempts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, including a 67-yard punt against FIU.
The Maryland native, who also handles kickoffs, is being considered for more responsibilities, possibly even contributing on long field goals. Lustig praised Nwosu’s patience and hard work, adding that he is performing at a very high level and has a lot of room for growth.
In particular, Nwosu could play a key role in late-game situations, where his strong leg could be crucial. Although Penn State turned to kicker Ryan Barker for a 53-yard attempt against FIU, Franklin noted that Nwosu made a 62-yard field goal during training camp and could potentially hit kicks up to 70 yards in a game.
Penn State’s coaching staff has been pushing Nwosu to take on a variety of tasks, including directional kickoffs. Although he has faced challenges, like kicking out of bounds against FIU and a 54.55 percent touchback rate, the team is committed to improving his performance in this area. Lustig emphasized the importance of making the special teams unpredictable, saying that having Nwosu kick from various directions keeps opponents guessing.
As the season progresses, Nwosu’s evolving role could provide Penn State with a versatile weapon on special teams.
