Texans Add Former Patriots Fullback Jakob Johnson to Roster
Ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans have made a move to bolster their roster. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans have signed fullback Jakob Johnson to their active 53-man roster, as confirmed by his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.
Johnson, a 30-year-old veteran, was initially on the Texans’ practice squad to start the 2025 season but was elevated to the active roster for Weeks 1 and 2. Rather than using his third and final practice squad elevation before Week 3, Houston has decided to sign him for the rest of the season.
In Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Johnson made a key contribution on special teams, blocking a punt that kept Houston within striking distance in the fourth quarter. Despite his efforts, the Texans ultimately lost the game 19-20, dropping to 0-2 heading into their Week 3 game against Jacksonville.
Johnson, a seven-year NFL veteran, began his career with the New England Patriots in 2019 after coming in as an undrafted free agent. Born in Germany and a former fullback at Tennessee, Johnson spent three seasons with the Patriots before moving to the Las Vegas Raiders for two years. In 2024, he had a brief stint with the New York Giants before landing with the Texans in the 2025 offseason.
With the Texans, Johnson has been involved in both special teams and as a blocking tight end on offense. Houston’s tight end room is currently thin, with only Dalton Schultz and Harrison Bryant on the roster, so adding Johnson provides additional flexibility for the offense.
The tight end group has been hit hard by injuries, with Brevin Jordan and Irv Smith Jr. both placed on season-ending IR, and Cade Stover also going on IR for at least the next three weeks. While Johnson isn’t an official tight end, he will add depth to the position and offer more options for the Texans moving forward.
