Bret Bielema Reflects on Illinois’ 63-10 Loss to Indiana
After Illinois’ heavy 63-10 loss to Indiana on Saturday night, head coach Bret Bielema addressed the media in a near nine-minute press conference. Bielema expressed significant disappointment, but also took time to praise Indiana for their performance. “First and foremost, credit goes to Indiana—both their team, coaching staff, and the entire stadium. It’s a very impressive venue. We didn’t start off well, which made things harder, but I’ve been around this league a long time and that atmosphere was remarkable.”
Bielema acknowledged the struggles on all fronts: “Offensively, defensively, and on special teams—we just couldn’t find any rhythm. There was the punt miscue where we had 10 players on the field, which created a free rusher. Defensively, they exposed some of our weaknesses, taking advantage of our leverage. We need to reassess what we’re doing on defense.”
He also addressed the offensive struggles, citing too many second-and-long situations that led to third-and-longs, putting pressure on quarterback Luke Altmyer. “We have to fix our protections,” Bielema emphasized. “We can’t have Luke getting hit like that and expect success. We also need to run the ball more consistently. Whatever adjustments we need to make, we have to make them.”
Bielema admitted to being at a loss for words after such a lopsided loss. “I’ve never been a part of anything like that. We just didn’t have any answers, and they kept piling it on, which is exactly what they should do.”
He briefly touched on injuries, mentioning the loss of several key defensive backs during the game but did not have concrete updates.
On Struggles of the Offensive Line:
Bielema stressed the need for self-assessment in the offensive line’s performance. “We have to evaluate what we’re asking them to do,” he said. “Indiana deserves credit, but we can’t keep playing this way. We need to figure out the right adjustments fast.”
On Lack of Adjustments in the Second Half:
Bielema pointed out that Illinois failed to respond effectively after Indiana’s opening touchdown in the second half. “They kept exploiting the same issues we had in the first half—big plays and staying ahead of the sticks,” he said. “We couldn’t catch up and keep pace with them.”
On Running Back Aidan Laughery’s Absence:
Bielema explained that Laughery, despite practicing earlier in the week, wasn’t able to go after warming up on game day. “He felt sore during warm-ups and just couldn’t go full speed. He was close, but we decided not to risk it.”
On In-Game Challenges and Finding Answers:
Bielema expressed frustration with how Illinois struggled to find answers during the game. “We didn’t belong in that moment,” he said. “We need to simplify things so our players can play fast and free. If we’re overloading them with too much, it’s not helping them perform.”
On Defensive Back Depth:
Bielema discussed the depleted defensive backfield, with multiple players leaving the game due to injury. “We came in with 10 DBs, and by the end, six of them were out. We had to make adjustments, with special teams players stepping into defensive roles. That’s a tough situation to manage.”

Bielema acknowledged that the team’s slow starts have been a consistent issue. “We didn’t play well in any of the four quarters. We need to fix that, but today, it wasn’t just the first quarter. We didn’t play well across the board.”
On Missed Tackles:
Bielema mentioned that there were too many missed tackles, especially in open space, which allowed Indiana to gain significant yards after contact. “We need to focus more on what we’re asking our players to do. Some of the missed tackles were a result of tough angles, but we need to do better.”
On Rebounding from the Loss:
Finally, Bielema talked about the team’s mindset moving forward. “We’ve never experienced something like this against two ranked teams in a row,” he said. “But we have to own this moment. How we respond is what will define us. This loss is disappointing, but it’s important we learn from it and move forward. USC is coming, and they’ll take advantage of everything they see on film. We have to get the right response, and I believe this will be the defining moment of our season.”
