More college football analysts have Georgia Tech in contention for a playoff spot rather than a bowl game with its 4-0 start
With every victory and their strongest season start since 2014, Georgia Tech’s bowl outlook keeps getting brighter. Now a quarter of the way through the schedule, the Yellow Jackets have set their sights on lofty goals—beginning with competing for an ACC championship and ultimately making a push for the College Football Playoff. Here’s a look at how national outlets are projecting Georgia Tech’s trajectory.
Projections
On3 national analyst Brett McMurphy has Georgia Tech slotted into the College Football Playoff, matched up against Florida State in the opening round. In his projection, the Yellow Jackets would sneak in as the No. 11 seed, with the Seminoles at No. 6. That would set up a rematch of last year’s thriller in Ireland—a must-watch game featuring two ACC powers. Under head coach Mike Norvell, Florida State has rebuilt its roster and rebounded dramatically from a two-win season, making this a first-round showdown between two teams with championship potential.
ESPN’s analysts both place Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl but differ on the opponent. Kyle Bonagura projects a matchup with TCU, who just cracked the AP Poll at No. 24, while Mark Schlabach predicts a meeting with Utah, fresh off a loss to Texas Tech.
CBS Sports takes a different route, sending Georgia Tech to the Gator Bowl on December 27th to face Alabama. Both teams are ranked in the AP Poll, with Georgia Tech sitting at No. 16 and the Crimson Tide just behind at No. 17 ahead of a marquee clash with Georgia.
The projections vary widely, from playoff contention to traditional bowl slots, but what remains clear is that Georgia Tech has put itself firmly in control of its postseason fate. National analysts are starting to take notice, with both Nick Saban and Kirk Herbstreit backing the Yellow Jackets to make the ACC title game.
Herbstreit praised their toughness, crediting head coach Brent Key’s mentality and leadership:
“Georgia Tech and Haynes King have grit. They reflect their coach, who carries a chip on his shoulder. He’s coaching at his alma mater, and his players play with that same edge. I love that about him.”
He also pointed to their Week 3 win over Clemson as proof that Georgia Tech deserves national attention:
“Clemson didn’t just hand that away—they tied it late. Georgia Tech answered, marched into field-goal range, and won it. Sitting at 3-0, they’re absolutely a team everyone should be watching.”
