Houston Cougars Host Elite 4-Star Guard

Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars continue their quest to recruit top talent, focusing on the 2027 class to strengthen their program.

Recently, highly sought-after forward Ralph Scott narrowed his final list to four schools, including the Cougars. Scott is the latest in a line of elite players showing interest in Houston, with more likely to follow.

This past weekend, Sampson and his staff hosted one of the top guards in the country, Montverde Academy’s Oneal Delancy, as confirmed by Delancy’s personal X account.

A standout from Monteverde, Florida, Delancy has quickly emerged as one of the most coveted prospects in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 46 nationally and No. 6 among combo guards, he’s also the 10th-best player in Florida.

Delancy has received over 18 scholarship offers, with notable programs such as Houston, Florida State, Maryland, Georgetown, and Mississippi State among them.

Delancy began his high school career at Gibbs High School, where he led the team to its first state championship since 1969 as a freshman. He also reached the state championship game in his sophomore year, averaging 15.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Afterward, Delancy transferred to Montverde Academy, citing the desire to face tougher competition as the main reason for the move.

Parker Ainsworth, host of the Locked On Coogs podcast, pointed out that Delancy’s standout quality is his competitive drive and ability to make tough shots, which he showcased on tape.

In addition to Delancy, the Cougars are also pursuing top-tier prospects like Ralph Scott, the No. 1 center in the country, Arafan Diane, guard Ikenna Alozie, and Reese Alston, the son of a Houston Rockets player. These recruits have the potential to continue elevating the Cougars’ program.

With the Cougars needing to reload after their near-miss in last season’s National Championship game, Sampson is leaving no stone unturned in his recruiting efforts to bring in the best talent. Houston will look to bounce back and make another run for the title in the upcoming seasons.

The Houston Cougars are set to begin their 2025 season against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on October 26 at the Fort Bend Epicenter in Rosenberg, Texas, with tipoff time to be announced.
