The Houston Astros are now facing a new chapter in their franchise’s history during what was once considered their Golden Era.
Heading into their pivotal series against the Seattle Mariners this past weekend, the Astros were feeling confident. After sweeping their in-state rival Texas Rangers, Houston believed they were in a good position, especially with the Mariners coming to a ballpark where Seattle had struggled in the past. However, the series unfolded in a completely different direction, as the Mariners swept the Astros, never trailing for a single inning and outscoring them 17-7.

Astros Face First Non-AL West Title Since 2020
With six games left in the regular season, Houston now trails Seattle by three games. Unless a major collapse occurs, this marks the first time since the COVID-shortened 2020 season—and the first full season since 2016—that the Astros will fail to win the AL West.
This raises questions about the future of Houston’s American League dominance, especially after their AL record seven consecutive ALCS appearances ended last year in the Wild Card round. Carlos Correa’s words give weight to the narrative that the Astros’ run may be over: “I think we did try our best. They were just better.”
For the Astros, these words carry significant meaning. In their years of dominance, they rarely had to admit that another team was simply better. But that reality is hard to ignore after their recent struggles—first with the Mariners and then in the Wild Card round against the Detroit Tigers last year.
While Houston has the potential to return to their peak form of 2017-2022, during which they won two World Series championships in four trips, it’s clear that they are not at that level right now.
The Astros need a strong finish to the season if they hope to make the playoffs, especially with the Mariners’ sweep pushing them out of the final Wild Card spot, as the Cleveland Guardians hold the tiebreaker over them.
