Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg Refutes Mike Gundy’s Claim About NIL Funds Being Behind
Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg refuted former head coach Mike Gundy’s claims that the Cowboys’ struggles were due to a lack of NIL funding. Gundy had suggested before a 69-3 defeat to Oregon that the disparity in NIL resources was contributing to the team’s on-field performance issues.
After Gundy was fired following a 1-2 start to the season and the program’s first home loss to Tulsa since 1951, Weiberg addressed the media and reassured fans that Oklahoma State’s football program is well-supported in the NIL era.
Weiberg acknowledged that some programs are more highly resourced, particularly in the current landscape, but emphasized that Oklahoma State is adequately funded. He said, “This is not an inexpensive football team. We are resourced at the level we need to be. I feel really good about the investment we’ve made and the support we have here.”
He pointed to the full stadium at a recent Friday night game, despite the team’s struggles in the previous season, as evidence of the strong backing. “Our donors are committed to winning here and giving us the resources we need,” he added.
Gundy, who took a \$1 million pay cut after a 3-9 season and no Big 12 wins in 2024, was unable to maintain the success he had built over his previous two decades at Oklahoma State. Weiberg now faces the task of finding a coach who can restore the program to its former level of success.
Weiberg is confident that qualified candidates will be attracted to the job, noting that Oklahoma State has a proven track record of winning and the necessary support to continue that tradition. “I’m not selling a dream,” he said. “I’m talking about a standard that’s already been established.”
