Iowa HC Relies on Dynamic Return Specialist
One of the standout players for the Iowa Hawkeyes is making waves as one of the nation’s top return specialists. In football, the game is often broken down into three key areas: offense, defense, and special teams. Most would likely assign 40% of the focus to offense and defense, leaving just a small piece for special teams. However, in Iowa’s recent 38-28 victory over Rutgers, it was special teams that ultimately made the difference, with graduate wide receiver and kick returner Kaden Wetjen delivering a game-changing performance.
Wetjen’s 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown wasn’t his first of its kind. Heading into the season, Wetjen had already earned recognition as one of the top returners in the country, with nominations from outlets like Phil Steele, The Sporting News, Athlon Sports, and the prestigious Jet Award.
During his weekly press conference following the Rutgers game, Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz was asked if Wetjen had received a “green light” for kick returns. Ferentz acknowledged Wetjen’s talent but tempered expectations, citing the strength of Rutgers’ kicker. “We’re probably not going to get many opportunities for a return, but if we do, we want Wetjen to have the chance to make a play,” he said. “We want to be smart about it though—starting from your own 15-yard line isn’t ideal.”
In addition to his kickoff return exploits, Wetjen has been outstanding on punt returns, averaging an incredible 33.6 yards per return this season, with one of his returns being a 95-yard touchdown against UMass in a dominant 47-7 win. Ferentz noted that Wetjen’s development has been impressive, pointing to his growth as a player after gaining experience in Big Ten competition.
“Two years ago, he was a good player,” Ferentz said. “But now, after the experience he’s gained, he’s really taken his game to the next level. It’s been great watching him compete and develop.”
So far this season, Wetjen has recorded six kick returns for 157 yards, averaging 35.5 yards per return, including his touchdown against Rutgers. As Iowa prepares to face No. 11 Indiana this weekend, Wetjen’s role could be even more crucial as the Hoosiers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) come off a dominant 63-10 win over Illinois and look to make a push for the College Football Playoff.
