Dan Lanning Reflects on White Out Atmosphere Following Oregon’s Overtime Victory Against Penn State
The No. 6 Oregon Ducks pulled off a dramatic 30-24 overtime win against the No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions in what quickly became a game to remember. After a quiet first half that ended 3-3, both teams came alive offensively in the second half. Penn State managed to tie the game at 17-17 in the final minute, sending it into overtime. The contest was ultimately decided when Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman intercepted a pass from Penn State quarterback Drew Allar.
Following the game, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning discussed the intense “White Out” setting in Beaver Stadium and how his team responded to the challenge on the road.

“This was a major growth moment for our team,” Lanning said. “That crowd usually accounts for about seven points, but I didn’t feel that tonight. The only real issues we had were self-inflicted. We knew this would be a fight, and we had to figure things out as we went. But the guys handled the atmosphere, and it didn’t end up impacting us.”
Lanning emphasized the unique energy of college football, saying, “That kind of environment is exactly why you play college football.”
He went on to praise both the White Out tradition and the quality of the Penn State squad.
“That might be the best game I’ve ever been a part of,” Lanning said. “Even if we hadn’t come out on top, it was an incredible game with momentum swings on both sides. Penn State is a really strong team. They found some things that worked late in the game.”
When asked about the overturned fumble by Oregon running back Noah Whittington — ruled down by contact after review — Lanning credited his team’s focus and resilience.
“Our guys were locked in the whole time,” he said. “We always talk about focusing on the next play. That’s hard to do in a 60-minute game that goes to overtime, but they stayed dialed in.”
