Cardinals Likely to Part Ways with Three-Time All-Star Amid Rebuild
The St. Louis Cardinals are heading into a rebuilding phase after wrapping up the 2025 season with a disappointing 78-84 record and missing the playoffs for the third year in a row. In response, major changes are expected, both on and off the field. John Mozeliak has officially stepped down as president of baseball operations, handing leadership duties over to Chaim Bloom, who had been serving as his advisor since 2024.
As part of this rebuild, St. Louis is expected to shop some of its top players, especially those who could draw interest from contenders. One such name is veteran right-hander Sonny Gray, who appears open to the idea of being moved, having reportedly shown a willingness to waive his no-trade clause.
According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, if Gray does choose to pursue a trade, the Cardinals shouldn’t have much difficulty finding a partner. “Sonny Gray, who turns 36 next year and is entering his 14th MLB season, came to St. Louis to compete for a title — but that hasn’t panned out,” Woo noted. “He’s spoken with Chaim Bloom and understands the direction of the organization, so now it’s up to him to decide.”
Woo believes a trade is likely and emphasized that this situation is far less complicated than past trade talks involving stars like Nolan Arenado.
In 2025, Gray posted a 14-8 record with a 4.28 ERA over 32 starts, striking out 201 batters across 180 2/3 innings. He’s entering the final year of his contract, which pays him $35 million in 2026 — a sizable figure due to the deal’s backloaded structure.
Despite the high salary, Gray could still draw interest from several teams in need of starting pitching, which is always at a premium. Though the return for him might not be substantial, the Cardinals should have little trouble making a deal if he formally requests a trade.
Gray initially chose St. Louis in part due to its proximity to his home in Nashville, but with the team entering a clear rebuild, he may now be looking for a more competitive situation.
