Giannis Antetokounmpo Acknowledges He Considered Leaving Bucks, Reaffirms Commitment
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo confirmed recent reports that he had thought about the possibility of joining another team during the offseason. Speaking to reporters via Zoom on Monday—after missing media day and the start of training camp due to COVID—Antetokounmpo admitted that such thoughts aren’t new for him.
“Absolutely,” he said when asked if the reports were accurate. “Every summer, there’s always some truth to those stories. I want to compete at the highest level and be on a team that gives me a real chance to win. That’s never going to change. I don’t want to be part of a team that’s out of the playoffs in April. I’ve had these thoughts before—last year, two years ago, even five years ago.”
Now entering his 13th season, the 30-year-old has spent his entire NBA career with Milwaukee and led the franchise to a championship in 2021. However, the Bucks have struggled in the postseason since, exiting in the first round three years in a row.
Bucks governor Wes Edens recently mentioned having a conversation with Antetokounmpo in June, saying the star expressed a strong commitment to staying in Milwaukee and appreciation for life in the city. When asked about it, Giannis said he didn’t recall that specific conversation.
Despite the offseason speculation, Antetokounmpo says he’s fully locked in for the 2025-26 season. “My confidence is at an all-time high,” he said. “I feel great, I feel good about our team, and I’m excited. I truly believe we’re a very dangerous group.”
