Luke Fickell and the Badgers Share Big Recruiting News
Luke Fickell Could Reclaim Four-Star Illinois WR for the Wisconsin Badgers
The Illinois Fighting Illini managed to land a four-star wide receiver recruit who was once linked to Luke Fickell. Now, Fickell may have a shot at bringing him back — this time to Wisconsin.
In 2022, Illinois flipped Malik Elzy, a highly regarded receiver from the class of 2023, who had initially committed to Fickell and Cincinnati. After Fickell accepted the head coaching job at Wisconsin, Elzy decommitted from the Bearcats and even took an official visit with the Badgers. However, he ultimately chose to stay in-state and play for the Illini.
Elzy spent two seasons in a backup role in Illinois’ receiving corps. Entering his junior year, he was expected to take on a bigger role but didn’t rise above the competition. On Sunday, Elzy announced he’ll redshirt the season and is planning to enter the transfer portal afterward in search of more playing time.
Illinois head coach Bret Bielema spoke highly of Elzy, emphasizing his character and wishing him well no matter where he ends up.
At 6’2″ and 225 pounds, Elzy has the size and athletic potential that many programs covet, even if he hasn’t fully broken out yet at the college level. His prior relationship with Fickell could give Wisconsin an edge if they pursue him again.
The Badgers already have a promising group of receivers, but adding a talented former four-star — especially one from a Big Ten rival — is always appealing.
