Texans Release Veteran Tight End Irv Smith Jr.
The Houston Texans have officially parted ways with veteran tight end Irv Smith Jr., as confirmed by a team announcement. His release coincided with a separate move sending offensive tackle Cam Robinson to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a late-round pick swap.
Smith, who joined the Texans ahead of the 2024 season, was initially signed to the practice squad and went on to appear in five games as a blocking and special teams contributor. Unfortunately, he was placed on season-ending injured reserve with an ankle injury prior to the start of the 2025 season and did not play in any games this year.
The former second-round pick—originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2017—also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals before his stint in Houston. With his release, Smith is now a free agent and eligible to sign with another team, potentially even making a return later this season if healthy.
Currently, the Texans’ tight end group features Dalton Schultz, Harrison Bryant, and Brendan Bates as the active options heading into Week 5. Cade Stover, who started in Week 1 but suffered an ankle injury against the Rams, remains on injured reserve and is expected to return after the team’s Week 6 bye, though a timeline hasn’t been finalized.
As for Smith Jr., his path forward remains uncertain. While he could land a spot on another team’s 53-man roster, a more likely scenario may involve signing to a practice squad and working his way back from there.
