Raiders Sign Former Bill to Replace Injured All-Pro
Raiders Sign Former Bills Punter to Cover for Injured AJ Cole
Week 5 was rough for the Las Vegas Raiders—not only did they lose, but they also saw All-Pro punter AJ Cole go down with an injury after a blocked punt. While Cole returned later to hold for kicker Daniel Carlson, he couldn’t resume punting duties.
Though his status for Week 6 remains uncertain, the Raiders aren’t taking any chances. On Tuesday, the team announced they’ve signed punter Brad Robbins to the practice squad as insurance.
Robbins, a sixth-round pick by the Bengals in 2023 out of Michigan, had a standout college career but hasn’t found his footing in the NFL. After a short stint in Cincinnati, he spent the offseason with the Buffalo Bills but failed to make their final roster.
Replacing a punter like Cole—who has earned three Pro Bowl nods and two All-Pro honors—won’t be easy. However, since Cole hasn’t been placed on Injured Reserve, there’s optimism he may return soon.
Special Teams Under Pressure
The Raiders, traditionally strong on special teams, have struggled in that area this season. Their issues were on full display in Week 5, when the blocked punt not only cost them field position but also led to Cole’s injury.
Head coach Pete Carroll acknowledged the setbacks and stressed the need for improvement.
“We’re working really hard,” Carroll said. “[Special teams coordinator Tom McMahon] has done a good job, and we haven’t changed our emphasis. We just need better execution and to eliminate the big plays.”
Carroll noted the team is rotating in new players and is open to using more defensive players on special teams to help boost consistency.
Cole Dealing with Ankle Sprain
With the Raiders’ offense still finding its rhythm, they’ve relied heavily on their punting unit—currently tied for seventh-most punts in the league. Carroll offered an update on Cole’s injury, calling it a low ankle sprain.
“He’s going to try kicking on Friday,” Carroll said. “He’s tough, so we’ll see how it goes.”
While it’s not yet clear if Cole will be ready for Sunday, the addition of Robbins gives the Raiders a reliable backup plan.
