Steelers Reunite With Former Panthers Linebacker

The Pittsburgh Steelers have brought back a familiar name to reinforce their linebacker group, signing Jacoby Windmon to the practice squad. The move comes after the team released Ja’Whaun Bentley and saw Jon Rhattigan signed away by the Las Vegas Raiders.

Windmon Returns to Pittsburgh

As first reported by Alan Saunders of Steelers Now, Windmon is rejoining the Steelers after previously spending time with the team last year.

College Background

Windmon began his college career at UNLV, where he played three seasons (2019–2021) and totaled 169 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks in 30 games.
He transferred to Michigan State for the 2022 season, adding 64 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 11 games over two years. After the 2023 season, he entered the transfer portal but opted to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft instead.

First Stint With the Steelers

After going undrafted, Windmon signed with Pittsburgh and stuck with the team through training camp. In the 2024 preseason, he recorded 11 tackles in three games but didn’t make the final 53-man roster.

He later joined the Steelers’ practice squad in October before being signed by the Carolina Panthers to their active roster in November.

Time in Carolina

Windmon contributed primarily on special teams in Carolina, playing 91 special teams snaps and seeing 127 snaps on defense as an inside linebacker late in the season. He finished the year with 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The Panthers released him in August, and he remained unsigned until Pittsburgh came calling again.

Role With the Steelers Now

With both Bentley and Rhattigan no longer on the roster, Windmon is positioned as a likely game-day elevation candidate, especially if the team needs help on special teams or depth at linebacker.

His familiarity with the team, combined with actual NFL game experience from last season, makes him a logical and timely addition to Pittsburgh’s practice squad.
