A few weeks ago, Michael McLeod appeared likely to sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, but fan pressure reportedly caused the team to back off. Ultimately, neither McLeod nor Carter Hart will be joining Carolina, with Hart now heading to Vegas.
McLeod’s name hasn’t surfaced much elsewhere in the NHL, leaving questions about whether any other team would take a chance on him. In the end, it appears no team stepped forward — but why that is remains unclear.
It’s clear he had little interest in returning to the NHL, choosing instead to sign a three-year deal with Omsk Avangard. If he had hoped to play in North America, he likely would have left the door open.
As time goes on, it seems that most Team Canada junior players, aside from Carter Hart, won’t be coming back to the NHL. Many of the others likely don’t possess the talent to make NHL teams overlook concerns about signing them, and the situation suggests that teams share that sentiment.
Remember, Team Canada junior players are ineligible to play in the NHL until December, though they can communicate with teams in the meantime. Official contract announcements can begin on October 15.
