DC Defenders Bring Back Bryce Thompson & Dennis Johnson
As the DC Defenders gear up for the 2026 UFL season, their roster preparations are in full swing. According to sources at Pro Football Newsroom, the team has re-signed defensive tackle Dennis Johnson and defensive back Bryce Thompson.
These signings follow a recent stretch of moves that saw wide receiver Ty Scott and defensive end Derick Roberson also returning to the team.
DT Dennis Johnson
Dennis Johnson’s return to the defensive front comes as no surprise. While not a high-profile player, he’s been a solid contributor for DC, especially during a 2024 season marked by significant roster changes. That year, he posted 15 tackles as a reliable depth option.
In 2025, with standout performances from Devonnsha Maxwell and Joe Wallace, Johnson took on more of a rotational role. He appeared in 193 snaps, made a few starts, and primarily played off the bench. According to PFF, he finished the season with 9 tackles and 4 defensive stops. A Grand Valley State alum, Johnson has carved out a steady role in DC and will continue to bolster the team’s interior defensive line depth.
DB Bryce Thompson
Bryce Thompson brings excitement and versatility to the Defenders’ secondary. He’s consistently made an impact in spring football, playing multiple roles across the defense.
Thompson began his spring career with the XFL’s Seattle Sea Dragons, where he notched 34 tackles, two interceptions, and six pass breakups. His strong performance earned him a shot with the Miami Dolphins during the 2023 NFL preseason.
After being released by Miami, he was originally set to return to Seattle, but with the Sea Dragons folded due to the UFL merger, he joined the San Antonio Brahmas. In 2024, he became a key part of Will Reed’s defense, starting 8 of 10 games and recording 27 tackles, a sack, and two pass breakups.
During the offseason, DC traded DE Jalen Harris to acquire Thompson — a move that paid off. In 2025, he repeated his 27-tackle total, added 11 defensive stops, a sack, and three PBUs. His film shows a player with excellent instincts and range, contributing in the slot, outside, and even in the box. His versatility made him a valuable piece in the Defenders’ blitz packages and run defense.
For GM Von Hutchins, bringing back Thompson and Johnson is a logical move. Thompson has been a consistent starter and could take another step forward now that he’s staying in the same system for a second season — a luxury he hasn’t had before. Johnson, while more of a depth piece, knows the system and provides reliable support along the defensive line.
So far, the Defenders haven’t signed any new free agents this offseason, instead focusing on retaining familiar faces.
