Auburn has been closely monitoring Saraland (Ala.) wide receiver DeShawn Spencer this fall as part of its key senior evaluations and has come away impressed with his performance. Though Spencer committed to Duke in July, he still holds an offer from Auburn and has maintained consistent communication with the Tigers’ coaching staff throughout the year.

Lately, that contact has intensified — wide receivers coach Marcus Davis and the rest of the staff have been in more frequent touch with Spencer as the season progresses. This past Saturday, he made his second visit of the year to Auburn, spending time with the coaches and watching the Tigers take on No. 10 Georgia.

Auburn is actively pushing to sway Saraland, Ala. wide receiver DeShawn Spencer, currently committed to Duke, and their efforts are showing signs of serious traction.

The Situation

Spencer pledged to Duke in July, but Auburn continues to maintain heavy contact and interest. The Tigers already made a move by extending an official offer to Spencer on August 1. Spencer, who already has past relationships with Auburn’s staff, acknowledged the offer as “definitely something to think about” while reaffirming his current commitment to Duke.

Auburn has leaned into relationship building — wide receivers coach Marcus Davis and other staffers have been in more frequent contact with Spencer as the season advances. They also gave Spencer the chance to visit campus during Auburn’s game vs. Georgia, allowing him to get a feel firsthand for the environment.

At 5’11” and ~170 lbs, Spencer is coming off a standout junior season in which he recorded 54 receptions for 1,220 yards and 16 touchdowns. That production, combined with his in-state ties, makes him an attractive target for Auburn to poach.

While Auburn is pressing hard, Spencer’s commitment to Duke isn’t superficial—he continues to publicly affirm it. For Auburn to flip him, they’ll have to significantly outperform Duke in relationships, program fit, and vision. The fall semester and Spencer’s campus visits could prove pivotal.

At this point, Auburn appears to be the front-running threat to pull Spencer away from Duke, but whether they’ll succeed remains to be seen.
