Phillies Likely to Decline Gold Glove Outfielder’s $10 Million Option: Royals Should Consider Signing Him
The Kansas City Royals are fully aware of the need to improve their offense after finishing third in the AL Central and missing the playoffs in 2025. Their biggest issue this past season was their outfield production, and in order to become playoff contenders in 2026, they’ll likely need to target an impact bat via free agency or trade.
This offseason offers several potential upgrades, and the market could expand if players opt out of their contracts or decline their options for 2026.
Royals Should Eye Phillies’ Harrison Bader for Outfield Help
Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report highlighted several players with contract options for next season and predicted whether they would choose to exercise or decline them. One player expected to decline his mutual option is Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Harrison Bader. This presents an opportunity for the Royals to consider adding him to their roster.
“The Phillies would love for Harrison Bader to exercise his $10 million mutual option for 2026, but this is not a situation where a mutual option will likely be picked up,” Kelly noted.
“While Bader could re-sign with the Phillies, other teams will likely be in the mix, offering the 31-year-old a deal that spans two or even three years.”
Bader had a solid 2025 season, hitting .277/.347/.449 with 17 home runs, 54 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 4.2 Wins Above Replacement between the Phillies and Minnesota Twins. His breakout year won’t price him out of the Royals’ budget, as he’s unlikely to command a major contract.
The 31-year-old is a versatile outfielder who has won a Gold Glove, plays all three outfield spots, and offers power from the right side. Bader could be an ideal fit for the Royals if they decide to pursue him. His skill set aligns with what Kansas City needs, and his likely price tag should be within their range.
The Royals aren’t likely to go after top-tier free agents like Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker, but Bader offers a similar skill set at a fraction of the cost. If 2025 was any indication, Bader could be exactly the type of player the Royals need to boost their outfield production heading into 2026.
