Rangers Shut Down Top Prospect Sebastian Walcott After One Arizona Fall League Game
The Texas Rangers have decided to shut down their top prospect, Sebastian Walcott, after just one game in the Arizona Fall League due to arm fatigue.
According to MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry, Walcott’s initial stint in the AFL was short-lived. The team has opted to give him rest and will re-evaluate his condition after some recovery. It’s unclear whether Walcott will return to the AFL before it concludes in early November, but given his high status within the organization, it’s possible he may not play again until spring training in February, where he is expected to be a non-roster invitee.
Walcott’s Impressive Rise
Walcott, ranked as the Rangers’ No. 1 prospect by MLB Pipeline and the No. 6 overall prospect in baseball, had a standout 2024 season at Double-A Frisco. At just 19 years old, he impressed with a .255/.355/.386 slash line, a .741 OPS, 13 home runs, 59 RBIs, 19 doubles, 2 triples, 70 walks, 108 strikeouts, and a career-high 32 stolen bases. He played in 124 games, following a 121-game season in 2023.
Walcott made history by becoming just the second teenager in Texas League history to finish a season with at least 10 home runs and 30 stolen bases, joining Roberto Alomar.
The Rangers originally signed Walcott during the 2023 international signing period, when he was considered one of the top international prospects. He quickly made an impression, slashing .246/.335/.471 with 7 home runs and 24 RBIs in 48 games at the lower levels. In 2024, he built on that success at High-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco, posting a .265/.344/.452 slash line, with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs. Walcott was named a South Atlantic League All-Star and played in the MLB Futures Game.
Other Rangers Prospects in AFL Action
In addition to Walcott, the Rangers have several other prospects in the Arizona Fall League, including pitchers Jose Corniell, Winston Santos, Emiliano Teodo, Kolton Curtis, and Joey Danielson, catcher Malcolm Moore, and outfielder Dylan Dreiling.
The Surprise Saguaros, the team representing Rangers prospects in the AFL, will continue their schedule this week with games against Mesa, Salt River, Glendale, Goodyear Park, and Scottsdale.
