Browns Shake Up Roster Ahead of Matchup With Dolphins
As the Cleveland Browns prepare to host the Miami Dolphins, the team has made several roster moves in an ongoing effort to find answers during a disappointing start to the 2025 season.
Sitting at 1-5 after a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Browns are clearly looking to spark change. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the team promoted cornerback Tre Avery from the practice squad to the active roster. Avery, now in his fourth NFL season, previously played for the Tennessee Titans and has appeared in three games this year, primarily on special teams where he has recorded five tackles.
To fill vacancies on the practice squad, the Browns signed two rookies: linebacker Eugene Asante from Auburn and defensive tackle Simeon Barrow Jr. out of Miami (FL).
Asante brings notable college production, having totaled 134 tackles, 13 TFLs, and 7.5 sacks during his time at Auburn, along with two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. Barrow made his impact felt at Miami with 30 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks in 13 games.
These moves follow a string of recent roster changes. Earlier in the week, Cleveland released offensive tackles Thayer Munford Jr. and Joshua Miles, while placing wide receiver David Bell on the reserve/retired list — a blow to an already thin receiving corps.
Each of these adjustments reflects areas where the Browns have struggled: an injury-depleted offensive line, a reshuffling defense, and a shallow wide receiver group.
Last week, the front office made additional moves via trades, sending veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals for a sixth-round pick and dealing cornerback Greg Newsome II to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for Tyson Campbell. Campbell made his Browns debut last Sunday, notching five tackles and two pass deflections.
Despite the volume of changes, none have made a significant impact on the team’s performance so far. But the Browns are hoping this latest wave of transactions can bring some much-needed momentum — and help them find win No. 2 in what has so far been a frustrating season in Cleveland.
