Colts to Add Veteran QB Following Anthony Richardson’s Injury
In response to quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. being placed on injured reserve with a fractured orbital bone, the Indianapolis Colts are signing veteran quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad.
Rypien, who entered the NFL in 2020 with the Denver Broncos, has since spent time with several teams, including the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. Most recently, he was with the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this year, but he was released on October 7th.
Now, Rypien joins the Colts ahead of their upcoming matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. There’s a possibility he could be elevated to the active roster to join a quarterback room currently featuring Daniel Jones and rookie Riley Leonard.
Although Rypien is the latest addition, the bigger story centers on Richardson’s continued injury struggles. Despite the latest being a freak incident, this marks yet another setback in what’s been a frustrating career for the former No. 4 overall pick. Richardson has now missed 19 games over four seasons, and with 2025 being the final year of his rookie contract, Indianapolis faces a crucial decision about his future — including whether to pick up his fifth-year option.
After losing the starting job to Daniel Jones, who has since emerged as one of the league’s top-performing quarterbacks, Richardson’s long-term role with the team is uncertain. While he may eventually return as a backup, his ability to stay healthy and contribute remains in question.
