Lions Sign Former Panthers and Chiefs Safety Jammie Robinson to Bolster Secondary
The Detroit Lions are making another move to reinforce their injury-hit secondary, reportedly signing safety Jammie Robinson to a one-year deal, per reports on Wednesday.
Robinson, 24, was most recently part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad, but terminated his deal earlier in the day before agreeing to terms with Detroit.
A 2023 fifth-round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers, Robinson appeared in 21 games across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He was waived late last year and briefly claimed by the Arizona Cardinals, though he was released following preseason. The Chiefs then picked him up for their practice squad.
While Robinson has logged just 75 defensive snaps in his NFL career, he’s been a steady presence on special teams, playing 366 snaps in coverage roles — an area where the Lions hope he can contribute immediately.
Ironically, the Lions faced the Chiefs just last week, falling 30-17 at Arrowhead Stadium.
Detroit Dealing with Multiple Injuries in Secondary
The signing comes as the Lions are navigating a string of injuries and roster issues in their defensive backfield. Starting cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold are both dealing with injuries, while safety Kerby Joseph has been battling a lingering knee issue. Adding to that, Brian Branch is suspended for Week 7 following a postgame altercation with Chiefs wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster, and his appeal was denied.
With Branch out and Joseph’s status uncertain, Robinson could be called into action as early as Monday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Lions may also lean on Thomas Harper, a waiver pickup before the regular season who saw extended action last week due to injuries.

Detroit has been busy reshaping its secondary over the past week — signing cornerbacks Tre Flowers and Arthur Maulet to the practice squad while parting ways with Kingsley Eguakun and Loren Strickland.
Robinson played college football at South Carolina before transferring to Florida State, where he recorded seven career interceptions, including four in 2021, his first year with the Seminoles.
With experience, special teams value, and positional flexibility, Robinson gives the Lions another piece as they attempt to patch together a short-handed secondary heading into a crucial Week 7 matchup.
