Steelers Receive Encouraging DeShon Elliott Update Ahead of Bengals Game

The Pittsburgh Steelers got a boost just ahead of their Week 7 primetime matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, receiving positive news regarding starting safety DeShon Elliott’s availability.

Elliott Cleared to Play

Just hours before kickoff, Steelers senior director of communications Burt Lauten shared that Elliott had traveled to Cincinnati after missing the team’s initial trip and is expected to play without any game-day injury designation.

#Steelers S DeShon Elliott arrived today in Cincinnati and will be upgraded to not have a game status designation. He is expected to play tonight.

Elliott had originally been listed as questionable due to personal reasons and was absent from the final practice of the week.

Impact and Season Recap

Elliott has been a key figure for Pittsburgh since signing a two-year, $6 million deal in 2024. He quickly proved his value, finishing second on the team in tackles (108), along with three fumble recoveries and one interception. His strong performance earned him a two-year, $12.5 million extension through the 2027 season.

The 28-year-old suffered a knee injury in the first half of the season opener against the New York Jets, sidelining him for two games. He returned in Week 4 against the Vikings in Dublin, Ireland, making an immediate impact with six tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception. In Week 6, he led the team with 12 tackles in a win over the Cleveland Browns.

What It Means for the Steelers Defense

Elliott’s return has sparked a noticeable improvement in Pittsburgh’s defense, and his presence will be crucial as they face a Bengals offense featuring Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, now with Joe Flacco at quarterback.

Juan Thornhill is expected to start alongside Elliott, while Jabrill Peppers and Chuck Clark may see increased roles, particularly on special teams, with Miles Killebrew out due to a knee injury. Killebrew, a key special teams captain, will be missed, but the depth at safety should help fill the void.
