Tom Izzo Urges Patience from MSU Fans Amid Football Struggles

As frustration mounts among Michigan State football fans, basketball coach Tom Izzo is calling for calm — and support — for head coach Jonathan Smith.

Smith, now in his second season with the Spartans, holds an 8-10 record, and MSU appears on track to miss a bowl game for the second straight year. With results falling short of expectations, many fans and alumni have grown impatient, with calls for Smith’s firing growing louder — especially ahead of a critical matchup with Indiana.

However, amid the criticism, Izzo has stepped up to publicly defend Smith, urging Spartan Nation to give the football coach time to build the program. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Izzo reflected on his own early struggles as MSU’s basketball coach — and how close he once felt to being shown the door.

“In year three, I lost to Central Michigan and Detroit,” Izzo recalled. “I didn’t need anyone to put a ‘for sale’ sign in my yard — my wife did it. And I don’t think it was because she wanted to move. I really thought I was getting fired. Strange things happen.”

Izzo’s Message: Stick Together

Izzo emphasized that while he understands the disappointment, progress takes time — and support from the fanbase is crucial.

“I liked how we played at USC. I liked how we played at Nebraska,” Izzo said. “I know Jonathan didn’t like what happened last weekend. But I’m asking you — we’ve got a big couple weeks ahead. You don’t win games alone. You win them with support from those who are supposed to be behind you.”

Drawing from decades of coaching experience, Izzo acknowledged the emotional toll of losing, but also stressed the importance of unity — especially during tough times.

“I get what frustration feels like. I’ve been there as a coach and as a fan,” he said. “But I also know I wouldn’t be sitting here today with the success we’ve had if it wasn’t for the incredible support from our fans and community. That’s what helped us win games.”

A Call for Loyalty

Izzo closed with a passionate show of faith in Smith, urging fans to stay loyal to the program — even when things aren’t going their way.

“Be true Spartans, like I try to be. I’m going to support [Smith], I’m going to stand by him — and I believe we’ll turn this around.”

While Izzo’s situation in his third year and Smith’s current struggles aren’t identical, his message is clear: great programs are built over time, and they require resilience — from both coaches and fans.

Should Fans Listen?

Izzo is one of the most respected voices in college sports, and his backing of Smith carries weight. If anyone understands the pressure of building a winning culture at Michigan State, it’s him — and his plea for patience may be exactly what the fanbase needs to hear right now.
