Hornets Waive Former Villanova Star Eric Dixon, Expected to Join G League Affiliate
Eric Dixon’s NBA journey isn’t over—far from it. On Saturday, the Charlotte Hornets announced they have waived the former Villanova standout, but he’s expected to land with their G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, assuming he clears waivers. If he remains with the Swarm for 60 days, Dixon will be eligible for an $85,300 Exhibit 10 bonus.
The Hornets had signed Dixon to an Exhibit 10 deal less than two weeks ago. A star at Villanova under both Jay Wright and Kyle Neptune—now an assistant on Charlotte’s staff—Dixon was a dominant force in college basketball. He led the nation in scoring during the 2024–25 season and finished as Villanova’s all-time leading scorer.
Dixon’s first NBA stint began with the Los Angeles Lakers, who signed him to a two-way deal in September. However, a foot injury derailed his chances, and he was ultimately waived before getting a real opportunity.
Still on the Radar: Dixon’s Pro Potential
Dixon’s offensive skill set—particularly his left-handed shooting and floor-spacing ability—could eventually earn him a spot in the NBA. However, at 6-foot-8, he’s considered undersized for a big man at the pro level. His long-term viability depends heavily on his ability to defend quicker forwards and wings—particularly face-up power forwards and bigger small forwards.
To improve his chances, Dixon would do well to study players like Guerschon Yabusele, who recently signed with the Knicks. Despite being similarly undersized, Yabusele has carved out a role as a stretch four by being agile enough to defend the perimeter and hold his own in the paint. Grant Williams, currently with the Hornets, is another example Dixon could model his game after.
Beyond physical tools, Dixon brings maturity, basketball intelligence, and leadership. He played a crucial role during a challenging period for Villanova and earned respect as a high-character, team-first player. That kind of foundation bodes well for his continued development.
