Rangers Coach Applauds Unexpected Breakout Player
The New York Rangers had an unexpected standout emerge this season.
Heading into training camp, the Rangers’ defensive lineup seemed locked in—until an injury to Carson Soucy created a roster opening. That opportunity was seized by Matthew Robertson, who impressed enough to make the team and has since become a key contributor.
A 2019 second-round draft pick, Robertson has finally broken through to the NHL full-time. In his first few games, he’s been dependable on the back end, averaging 17:17 of ice time and playing with poise—earning praise from head coach Mike Sullivan.
“He’s mobile, has a strong stick, and brings some physicality,” Sullivan noted. “We want him to be tough defensively, manage his gaps well, and move the puck in a simple, efficient way.”
Robertson has already tallied one goal in four games, and at 6-foot-4, he’s made a strong impression on the coaching staff—enough to potentially remain in the lineup even when Soucy returns from injury. He’s currently skating alongside Will Borgen on the third defensive pairing.
Teammates Take Notice
Robertson’s impact hasn’t gone unnoticed in the locker room, either. Former defensive partner Braden Schneider expressed admiration for how far Robertson has come.
“He’s had a long road,” Schneider said. “To see him getting this chance now is awesome. He’s earned it, and it’s great to see how much he’s grown in confidence and development. He deserves this opportunity, and he’s making the most of it.”
Robertson made his NHL debut last season with a brief two-game stint. Now, he looks poised to stick around for good.
“He’s always been a great skater, has a good shot, and plays smart,” Schneider added. “Now his decision-making and confidence are really clicking.”
First NHL Goal a Milestone Moment
Robertson scored his first NHL goal during the Rangers’ comeback win over the Montreal Canadiens on Hockey Night in Canada—a special moment for the Alberta native.
“It was incredible,” Robertson said. “I grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada, so to score my first in that setting, in that atmosphere—it was surreal. There were nerves, for sure, but the team pulled through, and I’m just staying focused day by day.”
Now settled into a regular role, Robertson is eager to keep proving himself.
“This opportunity means a lot,” he said. “I’ve put in the work, learned a lot about my game and myself, and now I just want to keep building and improving every day.”
