Ravens Add Former Cowboys Pass Rusher to Bolster Defense
The Baltimore Ravens have finally addressed their need for edge-rushing help.
After weeks of fans calling for reinforcements, the Ravens made a move by signing free agent defensive end Carl Lawson, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Lawson, who previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and most recently the Dallas Cowboys, worked out with Baltimore earlier this week before officially joining the team.
Lawson confirmed the signing himself, posting on X:
“Back to the AFC North.”
Originally selected by the Bengals in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Lawson has appeared in 89 career games, tallying 134 tackles, 122 quarterback hits, 32 tackles for loss, 32 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. With Dallas last season, he recorded 15 quarterback hits and five sacks.
What Lawson Brings to Baltimore’s Defense
The Ravens’ edge rush has been a major concern this year. Through six games, Baltimore’s pass rushers have combined for 15 quarterback hits and three sacks, but most of that production has come from players who are no longer active.
Tavius Robinson, who contributed two sacks and four QB hits, is on injured reserve with a broken foot suffered in Week 6. Odafe Oweh, who led the team with five QB hits, was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers two weeks ago.
With the unit depleted, the Ravens have leaned on Kyle Van Noy and rookie Mike Green to generate pressure — but depth has become a pressing issue.
Lawson, though unlikely to play immediately due to the timing of his signing, is expected to contribute soon in passing downs and third-down packages. His experience and burst off the edge could give Baltimore’s defense an immediate situational boost.
Still, this move is seen as more of a short-term fix. Ravens fans are hoping the front office continues to be aggressive before next month’s trade deadline, potentially landing a more impactful edge rusher to strengthen the team for a postseason push.
