Rangers Prospect Brennan Othmann Emerging as Early Trade Candidate

The New York Rangers are navigating some early-season challenges in 2025–26, including a noticeable lack of scoring—particularly on home ice. But recent discussions surrounding the team extend beyond their on-ice performance and into potential roster moves.

One name drawing attention is Brennan Othmann, the Rangers’ former first-round draft pick. Despite his pedigree, Othmann has yet to make a significant impact at the NHL level. After failing to secure a roster spot out of training camp, he was reassigned to the AHL to begin the season.

His demotion has reignited speculation about his long-term future with the organization. While the Rangers did keep rookie Noah Laba on the roster, Othmann didn’t make the final cut—fueling questions about whether his time in New York may be nearing an end.

According to The Athletic’s NHL insider Chris Johnston, Othmann has been identified as an early trade candidate this season.

“The Rangers system is deep with wingers, including the 16th overall pick from 2021, and they’re gauging the market on those players,” Johnston reported. “While they’re not in a position where they have to move Othmann, they’d be open to parting with him for the right return.”

Othmann’s Name Resurfaces in Trade Talk

Trade speculation surrounding Othmann is nothing new. As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman previously reported, multiple teams around the league have expressed interest in acquiring the 22-year-old forward.

“Othmann was sent down to AHL Hartford after failing to make the NHL roster, and since then, there have been conversations with other clubs about his future,” Friedman wrote. “The Rangers have plenty of depth on the wings, and it might just be that he needs a fresh start somewhere else.”

Although it’s still early in the season, teams are beginning to assess their needs and identify potential trade targets. While nothing appears imminent, the growing interest in Othmann suggests his situation is being closely monitored across the league.

Should the Rangers Move Othmann?

There are arguments both for and against a trade. On one hand, Othmann remains young and has room to develop. At just 22, he could still find his rhythm and realize his potential with more time and opportunity.

On the other hand, the Rangers’ depth at wing—and the presence of other promising prospects—could limit his chances to break through in New York. If rival teams present a compelling offer, the Rangers might see a trade as the best path forward.

For now, Othmann’s future on Broadway remains uncertain, but if interest continues to build, a deal could eventually be in the cards.
