Necas’ Hot Start Puts Avalanche in a Tricky Contract Situation
Martin Necas’ breakout performance early this season is setting the stage for some complicated contract talks with the Colorado Avalanche—and likely a significant salary boost.
Through nine games, Necas has already racked up 12 points, continuing the momentum from his career-best 83-point campaign. His seamless chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon has cemented him as one of the NHL’s premier forwards, and that rise in stature will almost certainly impact the price tag on his next deal.
According to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston, Necas’ surge could push his next contract into the same financial territory as Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million AAV—or possibly higher. In hindsight, Colorado might be second-guessing its decision to trade Rantanen to Dallas, especially given how well Necas has filled that void on the right wing.
With 12 points in 10 games and the salary cap continuing to rise, Necas is positioning himself for a massive payday. Current projections suggest an $11 million annual value, a figure that would still put the Avalanche in a tight spot as they try to balance star-level contracts across their roster. Locking him up long-term would secure one of hockey’s fastest-rising stars—but could also constrain their financial flexibility, the very issue that led to Rantanen’s departure.
Still, Necas’ impact on the ice makes him hard to replace. His playmaking ability, offensive drive, and chemistry with MacKinnon give Colorado a legitimate top-line threat. Even if the Avs are hesitant to spend big, another team certainly will. Unless they plan to explore trade options—which may not be as viable this time—securing Necas before he hits unrestricted free agency should be a top priority.
If his elite production continues, Colorado will have little choice but to reward him with a contract worthy of a true franchise forward.
