Atlanta Braves Suffer Brutal Loss

The Atlanta Braves’ 2024 campaign didn’t unfold as planned, and one clear indicator was how frequently the team cycled through pitchers.

Over the course of the season, the Braves used 46 different pitchers — a new franchise record — with many only sticking around for a week or two. Among them was Connor Seabold, who joined the big-league roster in August and made just four appearances.

It was a turbulent stretch for Seabold, who posted a 9.82 ERA in those outings, was optioned to Triple-A twice, and eventually designated for assignment. After going unclaimed on waivers, he finished the season off the 40-man roster, which allowed him to reach free agency slightly ahead of schedule.

On Sunday, Connor Seabold opted for free agency, according to the official MLB transaction log. While major league free agents must wait five days after the World Series to sign new contracts, Seabold qualifies as a minor-league free agent and is now free to sign with any team.

The 29-year-old made his MLB debut in 2021 with the Boston Red Sox and has also pitched for the Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays. Originally a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies and once ranked a top-30 organizational prospect, Seabold is now focused on fighting for a spot in affiliated baseball.

In 40 career MLB appearances, Seabold has posted a 7.79 ERA, 1.77 WHIP, and -2.3 wins above replacement.

For the Braves, returning to postseason contention after a 76-win season will depend heavily on better health and stability from their starting rotation, rather than relying on journeyman pitchers like Seabold to fill gaps.
