Sean McVay Sends Clear Message After Rams’ Win Over Saints
After the Los Angeles Rams’ dominant 34-10 victory over the New Orleans Saints in Week 9, head coach Sean McVay was visibly frustrated by one particular aspect of the game and made it clear he didn’t want to entertain questions about it during his postgame press conference.
Though McVay didn’t point fingers directly, he took aim at the Rams’ field goal unit, stressing that the issue needs immediate attention.
While the cause of the problem might be complex, McVay was firm in his statement that it must be addressed swiftly.
McVay Criticizes Rams’ Kicking Unit
In an effort to sidestep further questions on the topic, McVay took it upon himself to address the Rams’ kicking troubles, placing the responsibility on himself.
“It has to improve. We’ll figure out how to fix it, but it can’t continue like this, especially with our kicking operation. I’m not going to single anyone out. Ultimately, it falls on me. It’s been an ongoing issue, and we need to fix it. But I don’t want to focus on the negatives after so many positives from the team overall. It wasn’t ideal, and while we’ve worked on it, there are still areas where it hasn’t gotten better,” McVay said to reporters on November 2.
“We have to solve this, but I take full responsibility. Still, I’m very proud of the entire team. Our defense and offense were both outstanding. Ethan Evans did a great job with his two punts, pinning them deep, and the coverage unit performed well when we had to cover a punt in a tough spot. So, we’ll focus on the positives.”
Rams kicker Joshua Karty, who currently leads the NFL with eight missed kicks, struggled again during the game, missing a field goal attempt and an extra point—both of which came in the second quarter while the Rams were ahead.
McVay’s Warning About the Issue’s Impact
When asked to expand on the field goal unit’s struggles, McVay stressed the importance of addressing the problem quickly, pointing out the significant impact it’s already had on the team. He warned that if not corrected, it could lead to further setbacks.
“It’s already cost us, and if we don’t get it fixed, it will keep costing us. It’s been a momentum killer. It takes the wind out of our sails. Our players have shown resilience, but the harsh truth is this can’t keep happening if we want to achieve our goals,” McVay said. “We’ve been fortunate to get by so far, but this issue has hurt us throughout the season. That’s the reality.”
“This is my responsibility to resolve. We thought we were improving, but today was a step back, and that’s disappointing.”
As the Rams prepare for a challenging road game against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 10, McVay knows his team needs to address the kicking game or risk facing more costly mistakes.
