A’s Seen as Ideal Landing Spot for Popular Mariners Free Agent
A recent report has linked the Oakland Athletics as the best fit for free-agent third baseman Eugenio Suárez, a move that could help solidify their infield heading into 2026 and beyond.
After years of minimal spending under owner John Fisher, the A’s surprised many by handing out the largest contract in franchise history — a three-year, $67 million deal to pitcher Luis Severino — just months after officially parting ways with Oakland. With the team preparing for its move to Las Vegas, that spending could continue.
Why Suárez Fits the A’s
David Schoenfield of ESPN suggested that Suárez would be a logical target for the Athletics. Third base was a weak spot for the team in 2025, as nine different players combined for only 10 home runs at the position. Suárez, meanwhile, hit 49 homers last season between Arizona and Seattle, and has averaged 32 home runs and 96 RBI per season since 2021.
Schoenfield explained:
“The A’s aren’t usually in the mix for players like Suárez — especially one coming off 49 home runs — but several factors could line up here: his age, his high strikeout rate, and the fact that he’s unlikely to command a long-term deal. He’d bring power, experience, and leadership to a young roster.”
According to The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Suárez is projected to command a three-year, $69 million contract this offseason — a figure similar to what the A’s gave Severino.
Suárez’s Profile and Potential Role
Defensively, Suárez posted a -5 Outs Above Average (OAA) at third base last season, though his career track record suggests he’s usually an above-average fielder. Beyond defense, his power is undeniable — he’s hit 30 or more home runs in four of the last five seasons, driving in 118 RBI last year alone.
While his .231 batting average and .312 on-base percentage aren’t elite, his consistency in producing runs makes him an appealing option for a team looking to add middle-of-the-order pop.
The A’s could also weigh their in-house alternatives. Brett Harris offers strong defense and solid WAR potential, but most of his value comes from his glove. If the A’s believe Suárez can regain his defensive form, he would lock down third base for several seasons and free up other players for possible trades.
Adding Suárez to a lineup that already features Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom, Jacob Wilson, and Lawrence Butler would give the A’s one of their most balanced and powerful lineups in recent memory — a major step forward as they transition into their new era in Las Vegas.
