Cleveland Browns Add Former Fifth-Round Linebacker Before Jets Matchup
Despite their 2-6 record, the Cleveland Browns continue to look for ways to strengthen their roster. Ahead of their Week 10 showdown with the New York Jets, the team has made a move to bolster its linebacker depth by signing Cameron McGrone to the practice squad.
The transaction was announced on Wednesday, Nov. 5. McGrone, a fourth-year pro, was originally selected in the fifth round (177th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, though he never saw regular-season action with the team. He later joined the Indianapolis Colts, where he spent the last four seasons.
Over 26 career games, McGrone has logged 13 total tackles, including a personal best of six tackles (four solo) during the 2024 season. While he likely won’t see immediate playing time unless injuries occur, his addition provides valuable insurance to a depleted linebacker corps.
During his college career at Michigan, McGrone stood out as a key defensive player, particularly in 2019 when he totaled 66 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble — displaying both versatility and physicality.
The Browns confirmed in their team release that McGrone will wear No. 48.
Cleveland’s decision to bring him in comes amid mounting injuries at linebacker. Rookie Carson Schwesinger suffered a high ankle sprain in the Week 8 loss to the Patriots and is expected to miss 4–6 weeks. Before the injury, Schwesinger had been a major defensive contributor, leading the team with 64 tackles along with three pressures, a sack, an interception, a knockdown, and a hurry.
The Browns will travel to New York this weekend to face the Jets on Sunday, Nov. 9, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. Historically, Cleveland holds the upper hand in the all-time series, winning 16 of 30 meetings, including three of the last five matchups.
