Vikings Prepare for Tough Test Against Lamar Jackson and the Ravens
The Minnesota Vikings defense faces a major challenge in Week 10 as they prepare to take on Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson on November 9 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
After holding the Detroit Lions to 24 points in Week 9, the Vikings now meet a Ravens squad riding a two-game winning streak. Jackson is coming off a stellar performance against the Miami Dolphins, throwing four touchdowns while completing 18 of 23 passes for 204 yards.
Despite their 3-5 record, the Ravens are beginning to gain momentum and could climb back into contention for the AFC North title. The division remains wide open, with the Pittsburgh Steelers leading at 5-3 but showing inconsistency along the way.
Speaking with reporters on November 5, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell discussed the unique challenge of preparing for Jackson’s dynamic play style.
“Lamar is such a weapon — when he’s protected and in rhythm, he’s one of the best,” O’Connell said. “The key is disruption, getting him off his spot. Even if the first defender doesn’t make the play, it’s about maintaining discipline and containing him. He can change a game in an instant, even late in the fourth quarter. That’s what makes the Ravens so tough to face.”
Ravens Add Reinforcements on Defense
At the NFL trade deadline, Baltimore strengthened its defense by acquiring outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Jones, a seven-year veteran, is having one of his best seasons with 4.5 sacks and nine quarterback hits through nine games.
His addition gives the Ravens another proven pass rusher who will aim to pressure Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy early and often. Protecting McCarthy will be a key focus for Minnesota’s offensive line.
McCarthy Still Facing Skepticism
In the Vikings’ 27-24 win over the Lions, McCarthy completed 14 of 25 passes for 143 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception, while also scoring once on the ground.
Despite the victory, not everyone is convinced of his long-term potential. On the November 3 episode of The Herd, Colin Cowherd compared McCarthy to “a UPS driver,” saying:
“You don’t know who he is, but the packages always get delivered. He seems fine, reliable. But I don’t know if he’s special,” Cowherd said. “It felt like watching the Michigan version of McCarthy — solid when everything’s scripted. But the NFL isn’t a scripted league.”
Overall, the Vikings face a daunting task in slowing down a surging Ravens team led by one of the league’s most electrifying quarterbacks.
