Rangers Halt Contract Talks Amid Panarin’s High Salary Demands
Negotiations between the New York Rangers and star forward Artemi Panarin have reportedly stalled. Panarin, now in the final season of his seven-year, $81.5 million contract, continues to hold the team’s highest annual cap hit at $11.6 million.
While both sides have expressed interest in continuing their partnership, progress has been slow. Reports from October indicated that the Rangers were in no rush to finalize an extension — largely due to concerns about contract length, as Panarin is now 34 years old and possibly past his peak playing years.
According to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos, the holdup also involves Panarin’s financial expectations. The veteran forward is reportedly unwilling to accept a pay cut, prompting the Rangers to pause contract discussions. New York is said to be hoping for a discount if Panarin is to remain with the team.
Rangers Could Explore Trade Options if Panarin’s Struggles Persist
Panarin’s future in New York isn’t just uncertain long-term — his current performance is also drawing scrutiny. The Rangers have stumbled early this season, remaining winless in six home games and collecting only 14 points in 14 contests. Their latest setback came in a disappointing loss to the injury-depleted Carolina Hurricanes on November 4.
Following that defeat, The Athletic’s Peter Baugh highlighted Panarin’s slump:
“He has zero points in his past six games and only seven points in 13 total appearances this season — four of which came in one game against Montreal.”
Panarin’s scoring drought likely plays a role in the Rangers’ cautious approach to negotiations. If he were performing at his usual elite level, the team might be more eager to finalize a deal.
Contenders Expected to Show Interest
Despite his dip in form, Panarin’s track record ensures that contending teams would line up for a chance to acquire him if New York decides to move on. The Russian winger posted 120 points just two seasons ago, finishing fifth in MVP voting, and has been a consistent playoff performer with 61 points in 73 postseason games, including 15 points in 16 games last year.
Several teams have already been floated as potential landing spots. Frank Seravalli mentioned the Carolina Hurricanes as a strong fit, while Nick Kypreos listed the Minnesota Wild as another possible destination. Meanwhile, Elliotte Friedman suggested that Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek might be looking to make a bold move — one that could involve bringing in Panarin.
